MARCH 7, 2022
This is 142867 – no name, just a number. For three weeks she’s been in a Kansas shelter. For two of those weeks, we tried so hard to get her out.
She was seized, not stray. Her body, her constant trembling fear….they tell a story we did not want to hear, but we couldn't help but listen.
Maybe 142867 did not want to be saved. We would not blame her if that were the case. She cowered in a corner of a kennel and shook. She ate only when no one was looking.
Maybe she did not want to be saved, but we wanted to save her. We wanted her to come to know that life could be a gift, not just a longer sentence.
From the moment we learned of her existence, we advocated for 142867. We contacted twenty-two different rescues. Everyone was full. We learned more of what we already know: Pits are hard to place; frightened dogs are hard to place; sickly dogs are expensive to care for. All of it was true: Rescues are so full right now; bully breeds and scared dogs are harder to find homes for; malnourished dogs can costly. But we remained determined.
142867’s clock ran out on Saturday. We negotiated for two more days. That means 142867’s time runs out today.
Then yesterday, a miracle occurred. Our partners at No Dog Left Behind - Minnesota Canine Rescue have so often stepped up to help dogs in times of crisis. They have helped countless mutt-mutts from all over the world – South Carolina, Georgia, Afghanistan, Mexico. And last night, they stepped up for a nameless, quaking pitbull from Kansas. Did No Dog Left Behind - Minnesota Canine Rescue have room? They didn’t. But they’ll make some. They said yes to our desperate girl.
This morning, volunteer Lizzy hit the road. She will arrive in Kansas one-half hour before 142867’s deadline. She will deliver 142867 to Minnesota, where a new life begins.
There have now been three times we know of when this dog may have died after a sad, terrible life. The first was before she was seized by authorities. The second was Saturday. The third was today. Now instead, this morning marks the last tragic chapter in this dog’s tale. This afternoon we start rewriting the story. The authors are Lizzy, Greta, Chariss and all eloquent, caring hearts that define our Mutt Mutt Engine community.
Special thanks to Lizzy, who worked so hard in many ways, and Chariss, Director of No Dog Left Behind - Minnesota Canine Rescue who will make room in her own home so that this poor dog won’t die today in the shelter.
Stay tuned….and thank you so much for your support.
