The officials called it an accident. The people called it a bombing.
The officials said 50 people were injured. The people said many of them died. This is the circumstance from which little Camellia joins us – the unlikely survivor of a Kabul blast that killed her mother and siblings – this particular fact of the tragedy being one without dispute. Camellia was found alive in the rubble.
When there is misery, a dog is often salve. This is the case of Camelia too. Imagine the sight of something so innocent and sweet alive beneath the dusty rubble. Amongst gigantic grief, sometimes the sheer act of survival provides hope.
Sometimes, a dirty little puppy is a symbol of so much more. But now what would become of her?
I’ve little doubt that the woman who rescued Camellia is often asked, “Why are you in Afghanistan?” Undoubtedly the reasons are personal and complex but one thing I do know for sure: She is helping. Camellia is not the first being she’s saved there. Her house is full. Sometimes, too often, her house overflows.
Now we get to help the helper.
Now Camellia, a small, wiggling symbol of hope, gets to be a symbol of second chances. Camellia will live a peaceful life, proving that such a life is possible.
At Mutt Mutt Engine, we help people who love dogs find dogs love. If you love dogs too, you know this is not a trivial thing. Camellia’s rescuer knows this. Those in Kabul following her story know this too. And, so do you.
It is because Secondhand Hounds was willing to work so hard for Camelia – and her fans, and her rescuer – that she will arrive in Minnesota on February 16. Big thanks to them, to all of you, and to all of the dusted-off, unexpected symbols of hope among us.
