Hi! My name is Lily, and that black ball I'm sitting on isn't a ball at all. It is a big, giant hernia.
I knew growing old would have its challenges....my sight isn't quite as good as it once was, and I might need you to speak a little louder than you usually do cause I can't hear quite as good either. These things happen, along with some stiffness in the morning. But honestly, it's great to be alive! No complaints from me! In fact, come here and let me give you kiss! You sure seem nice!
Oh wait. Sorry! What was I saying? Oh yes! Aging! I expected certain things as I aged, but really, that's all just fine. What I didn't expect was a hernia bigger than head, and especially the fact that my family kicked me out of the house because of it. I'd have put up with that volleyball forever if they'd only let me stay.
I was very sad when Jael found me waddling on the street. I was worried I'd already died and become a ghost cause no one seemed to see me. But Jael did. She gave me something to eat and I swear to you, that bit of kindness was ten times the size of my hernia at least. It was huge, that kindness. I swear to you, it saved me.
Mind if I give you a little kiss? Oh, sorry! What was I saying? Oh, kindness! Isn't it the most beautiful thing? I can tell that you're kind too. And beautiful. Come here, just one little kiss!
My hernia got fixed up! I didn't know how it felt not to carry that pain. I mean, I didn't remember. Sometimes when I think of my past and how I was and where.....I feel a little sorry for myself. Just for minute though. There's others worse off than I was. In fact, I just met five of them.
See, I'm not the only dog on today's Mutt Mutt Engine transport to the Midwest leaving a miserable past behind forever! There are six of us aboard. We traded sad stories for a bit but mostly we looked to the future. We told each other our dreams. Who would ever guess that you could meet five other dogs you never met before and their dreams would be pretty much exactly the same as yours? So amazing!
Oh hey, you look so nice! Mind if I give you a little kiss?
Sorry! It's hard to concentrate! I'm just so darn excited. I'll get off at the first stop, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue in Fargo, North Dakota. There's a lady waiting there just like I'm waiting here. She wants to kiss me just like I want to kiss her.
I know it seems a small thing, but it's never been like that for me before - being wanted I mean. I had a home sure, and I was saved (thank you Jael and Shea!). But being wanted? That's new. And it's amazing! Amazing like you are! Would you like a little kiss?
Our chauffeur James just said we're almost there! We're almost there! We're almost there!
I will never forget you. In fact, maybe you're the one waiting for me! I can't wait for you tell me all about forever! And if you're not my new lady, it's okay! You're probably someone else's. Yours is one lucky dog. And that's just how I like it. We should all be lucky dogs, don't you think so?
Want a kiss?
I'm Lily. I'm eight years old.
