Camellia
The officials called it an accident. The people called it a bombing.
The officials said 50 people were injured. The people said many of them died. This is the circumstance from which little Camellia joins us, the unlikely survivor of a Kabul blast that killed her mother and siblings – this particular fact of the tragedy being one without versions or dispute. Camellia was found alive in the rubble.
When there is misery, a dog is often salve. This is the case of Camelia too. Imagine the sight of something so innocent and sweet alive beneath the dusty rubble.
Amongst gigantic grief, sometimes the sheer act of survival provides hope.
Sometimes, a dirty little puppy is a symbol of so much more. But now what would become of her?
I’ve little doubt that the American woman who rescued Camellia is often asked, “Why are you in Afghanistan?” Undoubtedly the reasons are personal and complex but one thing I do know for sure: She is helping. The Afghan staff at Kabul Small Animal Rescue is helping. Camellia is not the first being they've saved there, far from it.
Now Camellia, a small, wiggling symbol of hope, gets to be a symbol of second chances. Camellia will live a peaceful life, proving that such a life is possible.
